COACHING APPROACHES
WHAT IS COACHING?
In order to talk about transformation towards more equitable schools, we have to talk about race, class, gender and other issues that divide people (Aguilar, 2013). The answer to the question, “What will it take to transform our schools?” is radical change (Aguilar, 2013).
Coaching is a form of professional development (PD) to uplift people, create effective partnerships, increase emotional intelligence and support learning for teachers and students (Aguilar, 2013). Professional development is a type of investment that will hopefully maintain or even increase workforce productivity (Kraft et al., 2018). We as educators and coaches want the best for our students and people we interact with. To enhance student learning you must also improve the educator's learning. Both groups’ development and needs are of great importance.
Each coaching experience begins with a meet and construction of a work plan. Creating a work plan is a crucial tool for the coach and client to feel interested, excited and satisfied with their work together (Aguilar, 2013). A work plan guides the coach in how to support the client and also helps the client understand the coach’s intentions (Aguilar, 2013). This type of organizing will hopefully reduce or eliminate confusion and anxiety around the overall coaching process.
WHAT IS A COACH?
- Skilled and Knowledgeable
- Compassionate
- Active Listener
- Supportive
Heavy and light coaches refer to intensity and impact on how they support their clients: educators and other professionals. Roles of coaches depend on a set of skills and knowledge (Killion, 2009).
